Our shelter is home to more than 500 former strays, from puppies through to elderly and disabled dogs.
For us, there is no better charity Christmas gift than ensuring a former stray has full tummy, a warm bed and the medical help they need this festive season.
Speranta is a lifeline to strays in need, but our charity’s ultimate Christmas gift to our dogs is to try and find them loving homes. We aim to make every dog’s stay with us, however short, as pleasant as possible.
Christmas donations to our charity enable us to provide food and comfort until every dog has their day and finds a home of his or her own.
Our shelter is always improving, and thanks to kind donations, we continue to raise our dog’s standard of living every day. Our team cares for hundreds of dogs and every charity Christmas gift in the form of a donation helps us fund their care, sterilisation and rehabilitation.

Brave Agripina is a symbol of resilience at Speranta.
She was found in a terrible state in an area just outside Bucharest and, while we don’t know what happened to her, it’s clear she has experienced some trauma.
She is very scared of people but we are giving her everything she needs to trust again – time, patience and affection. She needs a sponsor to cover her food, medical costs and ongoing behavioural support.
I’m Aka and life hasn’t been kind to me and neither have the people in it. I’m 13 and I’ve never loved anyone. I’m withdrawn and scared, and I carry the trauma of 10 lifetimes, not one. I don’t need to go into them right now, especially since, I don’t know if you know, traumatized souls have great trouble being communicative and direct. How could they not, when so many people have hurt them?
Frankly, I don’t know if there’s anything more I can ask you to do for me right now. I’m at the end of my life, and I’m afraid I’ll never know what it’s like to trust someone. So please at least listen to my message, because I say it from the bottom of my heart and with great sadness: do not abandon uncommunicative people or dogs, those who are clearly suffering and who clearly cannot open up, those whose behavior has been reshaped by trauma. We all know that they can be unbearable at times, but they too need what we need: connection and finding a way around all those walls between us.
Albano is a special little puppy, one of those puppies that look straight into your heart. Saved from the middle of the road by a family of Italians who had come to Romania, he and his sisters, Romina and Sofia, arrived at the shelter with the hope that they would be given a chance at a better life. The image of seven puppies on the asphalt in the middle of the road, four of them already killed by another car, one injured and two others paralyzed with fear, unable to leave their brothers, who were gone, but especially the injured brother who could not move, could not leave the two Italian tourists indifferent.
Of the three surviving cubs, Albano is the unluckiest: for the moment he cannot use his back paws. Despite his special needs, he managed to find peace at Speranța Shelter, but his destiny was different from that of his sisters Romina and Sofia, who have already found loving families. He was left alone, a brave little fighter, waiting his turn for a new chance.
Albano will probably become the shelter’s new “full paraplegic”. Until then, we would appreciate any help we can get, as the poor little guy is awaiting many tests, X-rays and treatments with which we hope to give him the chance of a better, pain-free life.

Alma lived her life on a chain, in Chiajna. When the Animal Police visited her owner, he chose to get rid of her rather than sterilize her or allow her to live unchained.
Alma means “soul” – we named her that because it felt like abandonment had broken her spirit. But we were wrong.
After a life with Owners, not a family, Alma was happy to be in the shelter. She ran, she played, and she quietly told us she’d like to try again – in a new home. She’s a Malinois mix, quite close to the real deal 🙂

He has a name as beautiful as he is: Bach. We didn’t name him that because he composes memorable arias, but because we found him in the parking lot of Hornbach Militari. He was lucky that we arrived before the public shelter employees did. But his luck doesn’t have to stop there because Bach is not happy in the shelter.
He is already a well-behaved dog, like any adult who has learned to survive on the streets, facing hardships and people. He is confident, fluffy, intelligent, and extremely affectionate. You simply can’t get close to him without him immediately rolling onto his back, offering his belly for rubs.
We have already neutered and vaccinated him—if you want, we can even add a little bow. We truly hope he doesn’t lose his hope and spirit in the shelter, as has happened to so many of the older dogs here.

Sweet Bella is a lucky little dog. She was found with a badly damaged leg, which her former owner wanted to ‘amputate’ with an axe. We managed to save her just in time and our veterinary team carried out an operation to amputate her leg at our onsite clinic. Now she is one of our ‘tripod’ dogs and lives safe and loved at our shelter.

If you’re looking at me, I look like a classy, classy 2016 model (meaning I’m nine years old).
If you have the patience to let me tell you more about myself, you should know that I also have the temperament of a classic stray dog: I’m intelligent, resilient, easily adaptable to any conditions, I love food and I look for it everywhere. But most of all I love people. I’d give up a steak for a good cuddle any day. And yes, most strays I know would do the same. Don’t ignore us, don’t underestimate us. We’re bigger dogs than any dog you made in a lab. We are DOGS.
His name may mean ‘Tiger’ in Romanian, but Bila is a big softie at heart. He’s a quiet, patient dog who doesn’t yap or make a fuss. He doesn’t ask for much — a good meal, a clean bed, and someone to support him with a virtual adoption.

This distinguished older gentleman is 19 years young! He’s a little bit grumpy, likes his routine, peace and quiet, and we don’t even think about serving his dinner anything less than right on time! He keeps his circle of trust small and if he decides he likes you then you’re part of a very exclusive club!
