On 8 October, the Speranța Shelter Foundation marked 30 years of activity with the event “In the Footsteps of Kindness”, an evening dedicated to everyone who, over the years, has contributed to rescuing, caring for and protecting stray animals.

Every dog deserves love, even if they cannot yet have a home of their own. Not everyone is in a position to adopt a dog. Sometimes it’s housing. Sometimes it’s work. Sometimes it’s timing. And yet,

Many dogs from Romania have found safety and the love of a family in Western Europe. They are innocent souls, often rescued from extremely difficult circumstances.

Every day, dogs arrive at rescue shelters carrying invisible wounds. Abandonment, abuse, and neglect leave deep psychological scars, ones that a warm kennel and a full food bowl alone cannot heal. The good news is that recovery is absolutely possible. With the right rehabilitation programme, even the most withdrawn, fearful dog can learn to trust again, find a loving home, and thrive.

Across Europe, animal lovers are becoming increasingly aware of the stray dog crisis in Romania. Thousands of dogs are born on the streets every year, often without access to food, shelter, or veterinary care.

For many abandoned dogs in Romania, a second chance begins with kindness from people they may never meet. At Speranța Shelter, every rescued dog represents a story of survival – and a future that depends on compassion and support.

Sterilisation (spaying and neutering) is not just a medical procedure. It is the most effective, humane and responsible solution to dog overpopulation.
Prevention saves lives.

At Speranța Shelter, every dog undergoes assessment, medical care and behavioural observation before rehoming. We cannot emphasise enough this essential truth: training is not about control, it is about building trust.

If you’re thinking about bringing a rescue dog into your home, one of the first questions you’ll probably type into Google is:
Is dog adoption free?
At Speranța Shelter, the answer is simple.
Yes, adoption is completely free. There is no fee and no hidden charge.

The Speranța Shelter Foundation will grant its employees two days of bereavement leave in the unfortunate event of the death of the dogs that are part of their families. The measure is intended to inspire other employers in Romania as well, a country where such a provision does not yet exist in law.

This is a natural step, born from years of friendship, collaboration, and shared ideals.

Starting July 1st, 2025, the Speranța Shelter Foundation will expand its capacity to operate both nationally and internationally by officially integrating the team and activities of Animal Society under its umbrella.
