Speranța Shelter Foundation is a non-profit organisation dedicated to rescuing homeless dogs from extreme risk situations across Romania. Many animals entering our care are sick, injured, neglected, or abused. Without our intervention and dog rescue across Romania, countless lives would be lost to euthanasia or sustained suffering. Our dog shelter is more than a shelter; it’s a place of hope, healing and new beginnings for every paw that walks through our doors.
Our journey as a dog rescue charity began in 2001 with a defining act: the mass rescue of over 300 dogs facing euthanasia in a public shelter. Today, our facility provides a haven for about 500 dogs. For more than two decades, we have continuously developed and equipped the shelter with all the necessary facilities for the proper treatment and care of every dog.
Our Mission is Stronger Than Ever. By officially integrating the team and activities of Animal Society, we have become the first organisation in Romania to unify large-scale shelter management for dogs with strategic national intervention programmes.
This crucial consolidation allows us to combat animal suffering not only through direct rescue and care, but also through safe, professional dog sterilisation via massive, free spay and neuter campaigns. We are also empowering the community towards our rescued dogs with comprehensive educational initiatives.
We now tackle the root causes of the stray dog situation – dogs being born on the streets and abandonment, establishing a powerful hub where extensive shelter experience meets robust field expertise.

We are not just a dog shelter. We’re a team of heartfelt people dedicated to our mission who, along with generous volunteers and supporters, make miracles happen for the dogs who come into our care.
In over 20 years of work, we have written many success stories where elderly, paraplegic, traumatized, sick dogs have been given a new lease on life and are now enjoying a happy life.
From the moment rescued dogs come into our care, we put their welfare first. In addition to meeting their basic needs and medical care, we are concerned with rehabilitating them emotionally and behaviorally so that they can be adopted, which is how we created the “Messengers of Hope” training and desensitization programme.
To encourage responsible adoptions, we organize a monthly “Stew for all Bobiță” event, where volunteers, employees, famous and ordinary people cook a hot meal for the more than 500 dogs in the shelter. The event was born out of a desire to bring a little joy to the dogs in the shelter, but also to bring people closer to the animals.
